Record companies record artists, put CDs, MP3s, tapes and records containing the artists' work out on the market, and promote the artists they record. Usually representatives of record companies approach artists they would like to sign to a record contract. Sometimes artists contact record companies by sending in a demo. Different record companies specialize in putting out different kinds of music. Some record companies specialize in putting out artists from only one genre of music such as a hip hop record company. Some record companies sign many kinds of artists. Record companies promote their artists on radio, television, the Web and in print media. Larger or major record companies tend to have more promotional reach than do smaller or independent record companies.
