Retailers and wholesalers of meat products will often purchase their supplies from a meat packer because of the wide selection of packaged meat products they will usually offer. Meat packers are usually engaged in the slaughtering of cattle, hogs, sheep, lambs, and calves for meat, and the processing of those meats using techniques such as canning, cooking, curing and freezing. The meat is then usually packaged for human consumption and then sold to distributors and retailers who will then make it available to the public. The process of meat packing usually takes place within a meat-packing plant where specialized tools and equipment are used to stun and then slaughter the animals.
