A log cabin is a small structure usually used as a residence, built from logs. Log cabins have a rich history in American, as they were prevalent in our nation's formative years. Fairly simple to build, they were common both in rural areas and in cities in timber-rich regions. Some very old buildings, particularly in the American Midwest, are actually log structures covered with clapboards or other materials, as most log cabins were not originally designed to have exposed logs. The log cabin homes of the American frontier originated as basic shelter, built with the materials and tools that were available to the Pioneers. However, the log cabin homes of today combine tradition with technology to create contemporary residences with a rustic feel.
