The term “inn” was originally used to denote a public house and gathering place where drinks were served and travelers could find sleeping accommodations. In the Untied States “inn” is normally taken as a synonym for hotel or motel. Most hotels or motels that are called inns tend to be smaller establishments, although this is not always the case. Some inns are very old hotels but this too is not always the case. Sometimes people refer to bed and breakfasts as inns. Sometimes a bar, tavern or lounge will call itself an inn. But unless it offers accommodations, it is not an inn in the true sense of the word. Inns normally offer nice and comfortable accommodations but not opulent accommodations.
