When people are looking for jobs, they often pay a lot of attention to the employee benefits and compensation that a company can offer them. Some employee benefit and compensation plans include medical insurance plans with dental and vision coverage for individuals or the whole family. They might also include insurance for other medical needs like prescription drugs or chiropractic services that can enhance health. In order to make sure you are getting all of the employee benefits that you need, you will need to ask potential employers specific questions. If you do not receive insurance from the government, then ask the employer if their medical insurance plans include dental, vision, and prescriptions for your children and spouse as well as you. Ask the employer if they cover the entire cost of the health care insurance plans or if they only provide payment assistance but expect you to pay a portion of the costs as well. Many companies expect employees to pay for private insurance because it helps them save money. While it is important for you to get the medical help that you might need, you should also ask them if they have retirement plans that can help you save money for when you are older. This might include a 401(k) or a stock plan that allows you to invest money in the company’s stocks. The compensation of a company's employees is decided by the company owners through the board of directors (in the case of the most highly compensated executive positions) and the management team (or "management committee") for everyone else. The board of directors may have a personnel and compensation committee that deals specifically with labor compensation, and develops the company's employee benefit and compensation plans. The company's management committee or board of directors will also determine what non-wage employee benefits will be offered, such as health insurance, retirement plans, or other non-wage benefits. Sometimes the employee compensation may be negotiated with a workers union. In the United States there is a minimum wage, which is the minimum rate at which a worker can be legally paid.
