Colonic irrigation, also known as colon hydrotherapy, is an alternative medical procedure designed to cleanse the colon, or lower bowel. It is recommended by practitioners for the treatment of a variety of ailments associated with the accumulation of fecal matter in the large intestine, referred to as autointoxication. Some people believe that colonic irrigation can lead to better overall wellness, while others claim that it helps specific conditions such as arthritis, chronic fatigue, and sinusitis. It is also sometimes recommended to improve overall muscle tone in the colon, leading to stronger peristaltic contractions, which are the involuntary wave-like muscular contractions by which food is passed through the digestive tract.
