People who are very poor or who cannot afford adequate amounts of food will often go to a food bank in order to obtain non-perishable foods at very low prices or in exchange for volunteer work. Food banks will often receive large amounts of unsaleable stock from supermarkets and companies, as well as donations from the general public, and then help redistribute it to needy and hungry people in their area. Most food banks operate as non-profit organizations, as part of a church or community outreach program, and mostly rely on donations and volunteer work from the local community and the general public.
